Virender Sehwag was born on 20 October 1978, in a small town called Dishari, in the Rohtak district of Haryana. He started playing cricket at an early age and quickly showed prodigious talent. He made his first-class debut for Delhi at the age of 17 and went on to play 134 first-class matches over the next decade. He also featured in 24 List A matches, 20 T20 matches and three World Cup tournaments. Sehwag had an illustrious career in both domestic and international cricket, with him becoming one of the most consistent batsmen in the world.
Highpoint of Career
Sehwag’s finest hour came during the 2006 ICC World Cup. He scored 338 runs from five games, including two centuries – 111 against Sri Lanka and 133 against Pakistan – as India reached the semi-final stage of the tournament. His performances helped his team to consecutive ICC World Cup titles in 2007 and 2011.
Achievements
Sehwag is one of only four batsmen (the others being Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Michael Clarke) to score 10,000 runs or more in both ODIs and T20s. In addition to this he has also scored 25 century balls in Twenty20 Internationals (more than any other batsman). He has also won several awards during his illustrious career – the 2003 Asia Cricket Association Young Cricketer of the Year Award.
His Debut in First-Class Cricket
In his debut season in first-class cricket, Virender Sehwag amassed 7383 runs at an average of 52.52, and became the fastest player to reach 10,000 runs in ODIs. In 2007–08, he scored 9453 runs at an average of 58.92 and was awarded the Man of the Series award for his consistent performances with Punjab during the Ranji Trophy. At the 2008 ICC World T20 Sehwag emerged as India’s most potent batsman with 342 runs from five matches. His performance saw him ranked fourth in the world rankings and made him one of only three batsmen (alongside Brian Lara and Michael Jackson) to be placed in the top three of both ODI and Test rankings simultaneously. Sehwag is also a part-time bowler who has taken 66 wickets at an average of 21.14 including five 5 wicket hauls.
Records He Has Broken
Virender Sehwag is unquestionably one of the greatest cricketers to have played the game. He has brought laurels to India, with his stellar performances on the field. Sehwag has also consistently broken records during his illustrious career. Here is a look at some of his most memorable achievements:
1) Runs: Virender Sehwag has clocked up an astonishing 19,848 runs in Tests and ODIs, which makes him the all-time leading run scorer for both formats of the game. His brilliant batting displays have seen him score centuries against some of the best cricketing sides in the world, including England and Australia.
2) Most Wickets in a Year: In 2009, Sehwag became just the eighth player ever to capture 100 wickets in both Test and ODIs in a calendar year. This amazing feat helped him earn his place as one of India’s most iconic players.
3) Best ICC Player Rankings Ranking: In March 2011, Sehwag overtook former South African legend Carlos Brathwaite to take top spot-on ICC’s batting rankings. This victory came after he had scored tons of vital runs during India’s successful attempt at winning an Olympic gold medal that year.
Achieving Excellence at All Levels
Virender Sehwag has been a part of the Indian cricketing world since the early 2000s, and his journey through the sport has been nothing short of extraordinary. He first made a name for himself as a batsman, and he went on to become one of India’s most consistent performers both at domestic level and in international competitions.
But it wasn’t until Sehwag scored a ridiculously prolific 6,000 runs in 2008 that he truly caught people’s attention. This was followed by another awesome performance with 936 runs in just 11 innings in 2009 – an all-time record for any batsman – which led him to being named the then-world No. 1 batsman.
Other key performances during Sehwag’s illustrious career include hitting three centuries against Australia in Sydney, becoming the first batsman ever to score two double centuries in successive series (against Australia and then England), amassing 5,000 runs within a calendar year (2010) and taking 47 wickets at an impressive average of 24.14 during ICC World Cup 2011 – including seven wickets during India’s unforgettable title victory over Sri Lanka.
